The British Book Industry Awards will take place at the Hotel Metropole, Brighton, on the evening of 13 May 2008. To reserve places for the event contact naomi.gane@booksellers.org.uk (tel 020 7802 0801).

Please nominate your candidates for the following awards, also stating your name, company, telephone, email. Nominations for most of the awards will be sought in February 2008, submissions before this date, e.g. the Independent Bookshop of the Year, should be emailed to bbia@mdla.co.uk to arrive no later than 8 March 2008.

The British Book Industry Awards are based on performances in the UK during calendar year 2007. The Academy of the Briish Book Industry will be invited to vote in several categories although specialist judging panels will ultimately decide the winners of the Awards (marked * on last year's listing - see below).

Activair Award for Exporting *
Nominations not required. Publishers are being contacted direct to make submissions. The shortlist will be selected by an Academy of overseas booksellers and this Award will be presented at the London Book Fair on 14 April, 2008.

 

Aurum Press Independent Bookshop of the Year *

Submissions have been made by UK bookshops. Nominations can be made by a member of the public, until 22nd December. Nominations should be emailed to bbia@mdla.co.uk. The regional judging process is underway.

Baker Tilly Imprint & Editor of the Year

To a publishing imprint which has performed consistently well and to an editor of that imprint whose all-round skills have led to success in the market place: the building of new authors; commitment to quality; commercial awareness; originality.

Bowker UK Chain Bookselling Company of the Year

For a specialist bookselling chain or a general retail chain selling a significant volume of books. The winner will have achieved success in all areas; exceptional service to the consumer, strategic marketing initiatives, buying knowledge and selling skills, an ability to demonstrate growth and general all-round excellence.

British Council & London Book Fair UK Young Publishing Entrepreneur (UKYPE) 2008*

This award recognises the potential of an individual, aged between 25 and 35, working within a publishing house in any function (including owning one) to be a future leader of the sector in the UK and, indeed, internationally. Through character and drive this person will demonstrate entrepreneurship and the ability to promote publishing in the UK as well as a vision for the future of UK publishing. Nominated publishers will be contacted following this procedure to provide further information for the judging panel. The winner Nibbie and two runners-up will be invited to take part in a specially designed and tailored tour of Argentina's publishing industry. The tour (to take place later in the year) will provide a real insight into one of the most developed and fastest-growing Spanish-speaking publishing markets. Frankfurt Book Fair Rights Professional of the Year *

To an individual currently working in the Rights field, who has demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of international markets and excellence in achieving sales in the licensing of rights and/or co-editions or serial rights. The nominee's name and company is all that is required in first instance.

The Guardian Marketing Campaign of the Year *

Nominations not required. The shortlist will be drawn from the quarterly winners of the Book Marketing Society Awards. For the overall marketing package - originality of promotion; advertising reach; sales performance; trade & public impact and the creative talent to produce the required results.

Harlequin Mills & Boon Direct Bookselling Company of the Year

For an organization which has made a significant contribution to the sale of books e.g. book club, book fairs, mail order, direct supply, internet. The winner will have provided an outstanding quality of service allied to innovative marketing initiatives to encourage consumer sales, an ability to demonstrate growth and general all-round excellence.

KPMG Publisher of the Year *

This award is for a company with turnover above £10million pa who demonstrates consistently high quality publishing, outstanding commercial success and excellence across all disciplines e.g. design, production, sales, marketing, rights, publicity, editorial and all operational areas. They must demonstrate excellent author relations and care, operational efficiency, innovation and industry leadership. Company name only required in first instance. Publishers will then be contacted to provide further information supporting their claim in financial, operational and publishing sectors.

Lightning Source Small Publisher of the Year *

This award will be presented to a publisher with a turnover of not more than £10 million pa. The company will have demonstrated a high quality of publishing, and success in the market place commensurate with its size. Company name only required in first instance. Publishers will then be contacted to provide further information supporting their claim in financial, operational and publishing sectors.

Midas Public Relations Publicity Campaign of the Year *

Nominations not required. The shortlist for this Nibbie will be drawn from the winners of the PPC's Annual Awards, which are made in conjunction with trade and consumer media, to the publicists responsible for the best campaign of the year.

Nielsen BookData Award for Innovation in the Book Industry *

To a company able to demonstrate outstanding creativity and innovation either in new media or in the publishing/bookselling business. Nominations should be accompanied by a rationale of up to 1,000 words.

Orion Publishing Group Literary Agent of the Year *

To an individual currently working in a UK agency or as an independent who has continually matched the author with the right publisher. The winning agent will display a remarkable mix of skills and sensibilities, and instinctively know when to get involved with all aspects of the publishing process - editorial, design, publicity and marketing.

Stora Enso Design and Production Award

To an organization, department or individual for the design and production of a book or series that reflects high quality standards with eye catching style and broad appeal. Please nominate a book or series of books in this category and send one copy to Danielle Ibbs at PN.

Sue Butterworth Award for Young Bookseller of the Year, sponsored by HarperCollins *

Age 30 years or under, the winner will have demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the business of bookselling and how it fits with the publishing world; innovation in their approach; energy and enthusiasm; commitment to and commercial success in the promotion of a title that was a personal selection and all round professionalism in their chosen trade.

VISTA Award for Industry Achievement *

To an outstanding individual who, during the course of the last three years, has exhibited leadership and innovation within their own company or, more generally, to the evolution of the book trade. The winner will, in the opinion of the judges, have been a significant agent of change, bringing specific improvements to the way in which a company or the trade as a whole operates, leading to improved business operations and/or customer service. Nominations for this Nibbie should be accompanied by a brief rationale.

A brief rationale of up to 50 words should be provided for each of your nominations apart from the categories which call for longer submissions and those categories where rationales are not initially required.
